Health Fair coming to Rossendale

Free health and wellbeing advice will be on offer at the first Rossendale Health Fair on Tuesday 18 September.

The Fair, being held in Rossendale Primary Health Care Centre in Rawtenstall, is a collaboration between the NHS and a number of leading charities including Diabetes UK, Alzheimer’s Society, Stroke Association and Parkinson’s UK.

Amongst the many displays and participating organisations there will be the chance to talk about healthy lifestyles, nutrition, mental health and wellbeing, risk of type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s and dementia, end of life care and the opportunity to have free blood pressure checks. Advice will also be on hand to anyone who wants to quit smoking.

Dr Rahul Thakur, a local GP and one of the clinical leads at NHS East Lancashire Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “This is a really good way to get our residents interested in learning about, and improving, their own health and wellbeing.

“As a GP one of my jobs is to encourage patients to stay healthy. Many people want to improve their health but find it difficult to get motivated. One way is to speak to groups that can help give support. Whether you are trying to lose weight or quit smoking, there are groups to help.

“Unfortunately, national statistics show us that around 200,000 people are diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes every year, yet this is largely preventable through lifestyle changes. If not diagnosed diabetes causes all sorts of serious health problems such as:

• Sight loss
• Kidney failure
• Heart attack
• Stroke

The Health Fair is being held between 9am and 2pm on Tuesday 18 September at Rossendale Primary Health Care Centre, Bacup Road, Rawtenstall BB4 7PL.
