Temporary suspension of births at Rossendale Birth Centre extended until end of August 2021

The temporary suspension of births at Rossendale Birth Centre which was expected to conclude at the end of March 2021 has now been extended until the end of August 2021 or until a time when the vaccination programme moves to the large-scale vaccination centres.

This extension will ensure that the vaccination programme in Rossendale is allowed to continue at speed and ensure that all eligible residents have the opportunity to receive the vaccination. The situation will still continue to be reviewed every two weeks to address any concerns and make any necessary changes to support both the vaccination programme and maternity services.

As before, there will remain a number of choices for place of birth which are a birth at home (homebirth), Blackburn Birth Centre, Burnley Birth Centre (located next to Central Birth Suite at Lancashire Women’s and Newborn Centre, Burnley General Hospital), and Central Birth Suite which is located at Lancashire Women’s and Newborn Centre and is an obstetric led unit mainly providing care for high risk pregnancies.

Antenatal clinics in Rossendale will continue to run as normal from Rossendale Primary Health Care Centre Monday to Friday 9am – 5pm, and patients will be directed on site.

Dr Abdul Mannan, Clinical Director of Rossendale Primary Care Network, said: “We have been working really hard with our partners to develop safe and effective ways to deliver the vaccination and have made excellent progress. I really want to extend my thanks to everyone involved including our residents. We have managed to deliver a robust, safe and effective way of working.”
