Healthwatch Blackpool and Healthwatch Lancashire examine John’s Campaign visiting arrangements
Healthwatch Blackpool and Healthwatch Lancashire have published a new report that brings together feedback and findings from visiting two hospitals to speak to service users about the John’s Campaign.
John’s Campaign was established to help NHS staff recognise the importance of working with family carers as equal partners in the care and support of people with a dementia who are in hospital.
The aim of the project was to investigate people’s views of the new John’s Campaign visiting arrangements that have been piloted and introduced at Blackpool Victoria Hospital and Clifton Hospital.
During two visits in September 2017, we spoke to twenty-six people about their experiences of open visiting arrangements.
Some of the key issues raised by those we spoke to included: The need for better promotion of open visiting arrangements, more staff on duty to attend to the needs of patients, better communication between staff at times of change of shift, facilities for visitors to store or hang items and more support around parking charges.
Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has provided a list of five actions in response to the issues outlined above.

“It is heartening to read in the report that this new initiative, in general, is benefiting patients with dementia and their families.”
