New alcohol consumption guidelines

The risks start with any amount of alcohol being consumed regularly and increase with the amount being drunk.  The new guidelines have been issued with the the aim of keeping the risks of disease and cancers low.

The new guidelines advise:

  • Both men & women should not drink more than 14 units of alcohol per week
  • No level of alcohol is safe to drink in pregnancy
  • Do not save the units up and try to spread them over more days
  • Drink more slowly, with food and alternate with water

The links between alcohol and cancer were not fully understood in the previous guidelines, which were published in 1995.  The latest advice comes after a detailed review of the scientific evidence used for the last set of guidelines and has been led by a panel of experts who have been working on this since 2013.
