Act of kindness shown by Rolls Royce furloughed staff with overwhelming PPE donation
Frontline NHS health and care staff are set to benefit from the generosity and expertise of professional engineers, furloughed from Rolls Royce, Barnoldswick. The top team of engineers are using 3D printers to create face visor shields to protect NHS health and care staff.
NHS East Lancashire and NHS Blackburn with Darwen CCGs were delighted to receive 170 visors which have been generously donated by the engineer group, following the CCG’s appeal to businesses to donate unwanted Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
The CCG’s are hopeful that this donation will encourage other businesses to follow in their footsteps and donate more unused or unwanted PPE where possible.
Personal protective equipment (PPE) is specialised clothing or equipment worn by employees for protection against health and safety hazards. PPE such as surgical gloves, protective aprons and surgical masks and visors are now needed more than ever by health workers and first responders needing to protect themselves and patients during this Covid-19 pandemic.
The small group of dedicated engineers who have been furloughed from Rolls Royce are in the fortunate position of being able to help during this time of need. The engineers all have 3D printers as part of their home hobby interests and luckily these have the capability to produce face visor shields, to protect those on the frontline. A new 3D printer can be bought for around £150 – £500, and just a couple of pounds donation provides enough materials to make a new face visor.
Once printed, the face visor shields are given to the key workers free of charge. Within a few days of the project being launched, nearly 2000 face visor shields were requested, and as the group has responded, the demand has grown. All donations given will be used to buy the 3D printing filament material, the acetate sheets, and printers to accelerate the supply of these visors to the staff in health and care settings in the area.

The engineers have set up their own public Facebook group ’NHS Lancashire/ Yorkshire 3D Printing’. Here you can request visors and see further details such as Q &A section. Please visit using the page following link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3371482546214051
Alex Walker, Director of Performance and Delivery said:
“We are incredibly grateful to this group of talented engineers for generously donating their time and resources in the provision of these visors. These are challenging times and the NHS, health and care staff across Pennine Lancashire need an inordinate amount of PPE so any other donations are welcome and well received. Thank you to those businesses and organisations for their generosity and support”
