Dementia

Dementia is a common condition that results in a decline of the brain function and can cause; memory loss, difficulty concentrating, lack of judgement and understanding, and confusion.  The risk of developing dementia increases as you get older and mainly affects those over the age of 65.  If you are experiencing problems with your memory and you are worried about dementia, arrange to see your GP.

In East Lancashire, there are a range of support services available for people with dementia and their carers.  The CCG have supported the Dementia Choir “Singing Together”, an initiative that runs across Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale. Furthermore, three other schemes supporting reminiscence and memory aids also received funding. Our governing body members and a large number of staff are dementia champions.  As a commissioner, we have encouraged and supported our providers to be dementia friendly.

See below for some of the other services available in East Lancashire.

Dementia Friendly Rossendale

Dementia Friendly Rossendale is an example of a local volunteer group which helps to improve awareness of dementia in the community. Members of the group have worked with the CCG to produce guides to raise awareness of dementia in the community including a short informative general guide, a guide for businesses and a safety guide for families and carers.  To find out more visit their website: http://dementiafriendlyrossendale.org/

Time for You (Dementia Respite) - Clitheroe

Time for You is a fortnightly session held on Thursdays in Clitheroe, for people living with dementia and their carers.  The sessions are run by Ribble Valley Crossroads Care and they have a range of sensory activities to help stimulate personal memories for those living with dementia.  The sessions also offer emotional support to carers and provide them with the opportunity to have some time to theirselves.  Carers can either stay for the session or leave the person they are caring for in the safe hands of trained, qualified, care workers.
