The Common Childhood Illnesses handbook is an extensive and informative guide for parents and carers of children, from birth to five years old, to use when assessing and managing their children with minor conditions such as:

  • Teething problems
  • Dry skin and rashes
  • Ear problems
  • Fever
  • Chicken pox and measles
  • Bumps and bruises
  • Coughs and colds

Every parent or carer wants to know what to do when a child is ill – this handbook can be used to learn how to care for a child at home, when to call a doctor and when to contact emergency services alongside other useful local information and contacts.

The booklet is a guide for parents and carers of children and has been developed in conjunction with Blackburn Council to incorporate local messages and contact details. It is also part of a wider NHS East Lancashire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) strategy to reduce hospital attendances and admissions for paediatric patients.

East Lancashire CCG has developed these booklets into an interactive web-based version.

The electronic version of the booklet has been developed so that it is compatible with Smart Phones and Tablet devices and is available in both Flash and HTML versions. This can be accessed by typing the above web address into the internet browser on these devices.
